Raider Boys' Basketball has win slip away

The Raider Boys basketball team came off a busy set of games playing only one game this past week. That one game, against Diller-Odell (D0) was a heartbreaking game that ended as a 38-47 loss.

The game produced an ending this reporter does not remember seeing, ever seeing, in a high school varsity game. The Raiders fought a good game in the first half with the score never being more than a few points difference for almost all the first half of play. The box score:

L-N 6 13 19 0 - 38

D-O 8 10 11 18 - 47

The first half of play was a 'back-and-forth' game and the second quarter saw the score tied three times. Six Raiders contributed points in the first half.

The third period saw L-N play very well making 7 of 20 shots (including 2 – 3-point shots), having only two turnovers. A flurry of action in the last minute and half expanded L-N's two point lead to nine points by the end of the third period. The exciting end included a 3-point shot by Carson Vaughn and a Raider steal by Aidan Zikmund and coast to coast layup by Wyatt Frey.

The final quarter turned out to be a conundrum. The Raiders went scoreless for the whole eight minutes while D-O took five minutes to finally gain the lead in the game and then made free throws to build their winning margin.

The Raiders held a nine point lead at the end of the third period, but lost the game by nine points as well.

D-O made 10 of 16 free throws while L-N had only 5 of 16, but the Raiders played D-O mostly even in other statistical fields. The puzzle of the fourth period remains to be solved by the players and coaches.

Carson Vaughn led the Raiders in scoring with 12 points while Wyatt Frey had a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Aidian Zikmund had five assists.

Statistics: (Scoring – Rebounds – Fouls) Aidan Zikmund 2 – 7 - 1; Wyatt Frey 10 – 15 - 3; Caden Culbertson 6 – 4 - 3; Caleb Griffis 1 – 2 - 1; Jackson Williams 1 – 0 - 3; Cooper Heikkinen 6 – 9 - 2; Carson Vaughn 12 – 2 - 0. Raider total: 38 – 40 - 13; Diller-Odell total 47 – 39 - 13.

The boys play Blue Hill at home on Tuesday and Silver Lake at home on Friday before action in the TVC Tournament.
