Last week was a busy week for many of Nebraska High School weeks, and the L-N Lady Raiders was among the busy teams. They played three games within five days, earning one victory for the week.
After the rough start at the beginning of the season, the Lady Raiders are beginning to work as a team. They have won five of the last eight games and are looking forward to a successful end of the season.
L-N – ROCK HILLS (R/H): 39-44: Basketball is a complicated game that has many part. A team often has to be better in almost all of those parts in order to win. For example in last week's first game the Lady Raiders shot better from the field; had seven player score compared to four for RH, had a 39-27 edge in rebounding and had a 8-5 edge in assists, but yet lost a highly contested game. The box score:
L-N 8 5 10 16 - 39
RH 9 13 10 12 - 44
The two areas that hurt were turnovers: down 20-12 and free throws (making 6-15 while RH hit 14-18).
L-N gave up turnover in the first period, but RH could not capitalize on them. The Lady Raiders had three players score in this period.
The second period saw the Raiders cut down on turnovers, but just could not get an offense working.
The third period seemed to go quickly as each team scored ten points with RH's last two points coming as the buzzer was ringing.
In the final period, The Lady Raiders fell 13 points down early in the period. However, scoring by Menke, Harrison, Hajny and Koehler slowly ate away at the RH lead, cutting the score to just four points with a few seconds left in the game.
Kara Menke put together another 'double-double' with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Addison McCloskey led the team in assists with four; and Bayleigh Bohlen and Brynn Harrison each had two steals.
Statistics: (Scoring – Rebounds – Fouls) Addison McCloskey 5 – 3 - 2; Kali Cassell 4 – 1 - 5; Bayleigh Bohlen 2 – 3 - 2; Vali Koehler 3 – 4 - 1; Kara Menke 15 – 10 - 2; Josie Hajny 2 – 6 - 1; Maddy Laughlin 0 – 2 - 2; Brynn Harrison 8 – 6 - 2; L-N total: 39 – 39 - 17; RH total: 44 – 27 - 12.
L-N – KENESAW: 31-48: The girls faced Class D-1 Kenesaw on Friday and had to deal with a team with a successful record.
The Lady Raiders kept pace with Kenesaw for the first half of play. However, Kenesaw had just a little advantage in the second half that added up to the defeat.
The Lady Raiders battled hard on the boards and tied Kenesaw in rebounds with each team having 34. Each team also tied in the number of steals with 10 each.
Addison McCloskey led the Raiders scoring with 10 points. Addison and Brynn Harrison each had 3 steals. Vali Koehler had three assists.
Statistics: (Scoring – Rebounds – Fouls) Addison McCloskey 10 – 1 - 1; Kali Cassell 2 – 3 - 2; Bayleigh Bohlen 2 – 2 - 1; Maya Fanning 3 – 0 - 1; Vali Koehler 3 – 4 - 2; Kara Menke 3 – 8 - 2; Josie Hajny 1 – 9 - 1; Maddy Laughlin 0 – 1 - 0; Brynn Harrison 7 – 2 - 2; L/N total: 31 – 34 - 12; Kenesaw total: 48 – 34 - 17.
L-N – AXTELL: 29 – 17: The last game of the week produced the lowest scoring game of the season. That isn't bad if you win . . . and, the Lady Raiders did well enough to make it to the final period where they scored enough points to put the game to bed.
Vali Koehler scored the first points of the game, followed by Brynn Harrison, early in the period. Axtell was held scoreless for the first 13 minutes of the game.
Scoring increased in the second half of play and in the third period the Lady Raiders hit 6 of 6 from the charity stripe. The girls' final period was maybe their best of the night, scoring 13 points. The final two points of the game for L-N was maybe the most interesting. Kara Menke put the shot up and the ball bounced on the back of the basket rim three times before it fell through for the points. Kara Menke recorded another 'double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Axtell had a rebounding advantage but also had 30 turnovers forced by the Raiders. L-N had more assists, blocks and steals, but fewer fouls which all goes together in a victory.
Statistics: (Scoring – Rebounds – Fouls) Kali Cassell 0 – 1 - 2; Bayleigh Bohlen 0 – 5 - 1; Vali Koehler 5 – 4 - 1; Kara Menke 17 – 10 - 4; Josie Hajny 0 – 0 - 4; Maddy Laughlin 1 – 4 - 3; Brynn Harrison 6 – 3 - 4; L-N total: 29 – 32 - 19; Axtell total: 17 – 39 - 24.
This week, the Lady Raiders entertain Deshler on Tuesday and Diller-Odell today (Thursday).
