Student's car stolen from Kiers
Noah Shipman was in for a surprise Wednesday evening after leaving work at Kiers. When he went out to start his car, he found it wasn't in the employee parking lot across the street from Kiers where he had parked it that afternoon. Shipman, a 17-year-old senior at Rock Hills Junior-Senior High School, had saved money to purchase the 2001 Oldsmobile Intrigue while he was working at Bob's of Mankato, where he was a cook for two years. He was able to purchase the car last June. Shipman lives in Mankato.
Shipman has been a bagger and carry out employee at Kiers for about five months. He didn't realize his car was missing until a little before 7 p.m. when he was told he could bring the car closer to the building. On Thursday, when talking to another employee at Kiers, it was learned Shipman's car was not in the parking lot at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday when that employee had left work. Since the employee parking lot is across the street from Kiers and partially obscured from view by the dog and cat food shelves in the store, no one realized the Oldsmobile had gone missing.
Shipman's car was known to burn oil, so he had kept a 5-quart container of motor oil in the back seat for the times when it needed it. When the car was recovered Saturday in McPherson, the new 5-quart container was emptied. The Oldsmobile was left abandoned at a motel in McPherson with blankets and a pillow in the backseat and blood on the inside as well as a few spots on the outside of the car.
The car was apparently stolen by 39-year-old Christopher Herz of Burr Oak. Herz was arrested by the McPherson Police Department and is being charged with felony theft of property.
