On Jan. 4, 2024, at approximately 6:17 p.m. a call came into Jewell County 911 Dispatch Center about a vehicle overturning in the ditch. During initial investigation the vehicle was on Highway US 36 near mile marker 219.5. Formoso Fire, Jewell County Rescue, Jewell County EMS, and Jewell County Sheriff’s Office all responded.
When responders arrived, they found a Yellow Ford F150 on its side. The pick-up was driven a 71- year-old male. The pick-up was traveling west bound when it hit a patch of ice and spun out of control going into the north ditch. The vehicle rolled at least one and half times stopping on the passenger side. The passenger, Leland McGuire, 20, from Phillipsburg, Kansas, died because of his injuries.
