Superior students share their perceived community needs

In December representatives of the Superior Public Schools’ student newspaper, The Flashlight, met with a representative of the City of Superior with regard to preparing an article on what the city was doing and what improvements were being considered. Part of the discussion centered on the ongoing work to improve the community parks and recreation opportunities.

Cora Schnakenberg volunteered to survey the student body on what they considered to be most needed in the community.

The city is currently preparing a 15-year improvement plan and students are being offered an opportunity to participate in the development of that plan.

Schnakenberg prepared a questionnaire asking the students what they would like to see in the community A total of 134 students responded to the questionnaire. They expressed opinions on things like restaurants, businesses in general, amenities, additions to parks and shared their current likes and dislikes about the town.

For restaurants, the students had five options to vote on and a box to enter other choices. Sixty-one people said they would like to have a Runza added, 59 wanted a Pizza Hut, 56 a McDonalds and 50 chose a Sonic. Other choices entered multiple times included Raising Cane’s, Jimmy John’s and Dairy Queen. A few of the students recommended adding another nice sit down restaurant instead of just fast food.

When questioned about what businesses or amenities they would like, 61 wanted an ice cream shop, 57 wanted an arcade, 46 voted for miniature golf, 44 requested more boutiques and a pottery painting store. Thirty-four wanted a soda shop. Other responses included a western store, butcher shop and a home decor store.

Students and school staff were asked about what they would like added to the city parks. Seveny-nine voted for a splash pad and 39 wanted more trees planted. Other items mentioned were walking trails, more flowers, an improved swimming pool, a bass fishing pond and newer or different slides.

When asked what they liked about Superior, many said they enjoyed the small town size, sense of community and the residents. Others indicated they like the community’s restaurants, stores, hospital, swimming pool and movie theatre.

Dislikes included the lack activity options which included things like entertainment, restaurants and shopping. Others said there too many run down houses and poor sidewalks.

In all the responses were mostly positive.
