Rocky Miller, a 2024 Nelson High School graduate, is thriving at Wesleyan University. Graduating from a class of 16 and then attending a college where hundreds attend classes and lectures, was quite a transformation for him. Rocky is pursuing a degree that will enable him to get a job as a physical education teacher, and football coach. Rocky is the son of Brent and Carrie Miller, Carrie is the current Nuckoll's County Clerk. He has also been working at the court house as interim custodian, while on his winter break from college.
Nebraska Wesleyan University was founded by a group of Methodists in 1887. Located in Lincoln at 5000 Saint Paul Avenue, the college has grown through the years. It has remained privately owned by a Methodist foundation, and is a non-profit university offering a wide variety of majors.
Rocky received a scholarship to attend Wesleyan, and resides at Centennial Hall on the main campus. He took 13 credit hours last semester, and plans on taking 15 credits for his upcoming spring semester. He enjoys living on campus and attending athletic events at the college.
Rocky is a defensive end for the football team at Wesleyan, and has been a scout team player of the week three times. His team members come from around the globe including South Africa, Cameroon Central Africa, Arizona, Colorado and of course Nebraska. He's happy with his coaches and team-mates. All the players eat their meals together daily on campus, and enjoy getting together during the evening hours. They also go out to movies and events in the community.
Rocky's schedule for the fall semester was quite busy. Lifting weights two times a week, going to classes during the day and attending football practice Monday through Friday. His classes kept him busy, and it is there where he met his current girlfriend. She is attending Wesleyan because they have a medical program that coincides with her goal as becoming a medical doctor. Rocky's spring semester will include 15 credit hours, weight lifting four days a week and football practice Monday through Friday.
Members of the team have a Bible-Study that is held in one of the sports rooms at their athletic center. The wife of the head coach, Brian Keller, brings in chocolate chip cookies for them. Athletes from many sports attend. The campus also has a Methodist Church which is open for everyone.
After graduation, Rocky would like to stay in the Lincoln and Omaha area. His sister soon will be graduating from high school, and he is happy she's planning on going to college also. He advised seniors planning on going to college to get as many scholarships as they can, and don't take any 8 a.m. classes.
