Raider Boys Basketball Team win 3 straight, improve to 5-3

The L/N boys basketball team won two games last week, giving them three straight wins to make their record 5-3 in the young season. They are now 1-1 against class C-2 schools, 2-1 against class D-1 schools and 2-1 against D-2 schools.

The holiday vacation was changed with the addition of the postponed game with Franklin Saturday evening on the home floor.

The next games are a home game against a strong McCool Junction team on Tuesday and visits to Giltner on January 9 and Rock Hills on January 14.

L/N – HAMPTON: 56-39

The L/N boys basketball team greeted the New Year by entertaining the Hampton High School team on the second day of the New Year. And the contest was a good game for the Raiders, winning 56-39. With the victory, the boys broke their rollercoaster season of winning and losing following one another. The season records changed to 4-3 with two consecutive wins.

Hampton opened the scoring with a 3-pt. shot early, but then the Raider defense held them scoreless for over six minutes. Meanwhile three Raiders (Vaughn, Frey and Williams) combined for 15 points to establish a solid lead that continued to grow during the game.

The box score:

L/N          15    10    26    5  -  56

Hampton   6      6    14   13  -  39

The second period was more of a defensive game with only 17 points scored between the two teams. L/N forced 5 turnovers from Hampton in this period.

Almost half of the scoring of the game came in the third period with L/N hitting close to 50 percent of their field goals and hit 7 of 7 consecutive free throws.

Frey with 16 and Williams with 13 and Vaughn with 9 led the team scoring. Frey also had 11 rebounds for a “double-double.” Aiden Zikmund had 2 assists, 7 pass deflections and 2 steals as he kept busy for the night. Caden Culbertson recorded two assists along with four pass deflections and two steals.

Statistics: (Scoring – Rebounds – Fouls) Aidan Zikmund 7 – 4 - 2; Wyatt Frey 16 – 11 - 3; Hayden Mazour 0 – 1 - 2; Caden Culbertson 5 – 4 - 2; Jackson Williams 13 – 2 - 1; Caleb Griffis 2 – 10 – 1; Sawyer Cox 4 – 6 - 1; Cooper Heikkinen 0 – 2 - 2; Carson Vaughn 9 – 2 - 0. Raider total: 56 – 46 - 14; Hampton total 39 – 41 - 16.

L/N – FRANKLIN: 59-17

A game originally scheduled for December (postponed due to an ice storm) was replayed last week. The Raiders took advantage of the event, scoring nearly three times that of visiting Franklin High School to win their third game in a row. The box score:

L/N           19    13    18     9  -  59

Franklin      8      3      4     2  -  17

The early score did not give any indication of the full game. Franklin led 6-5 four minutes into the game. However, Franklin was scoreless for the next four minutes as L/N poured 14 points through the net.  Two highlights of the period were: no turnovers by L/N; secondly: L/N made 3 of 6 3-pt. field goals. They came from Carson Vaughn, Jack Williams and Aiden Zikmund.

The Raider defense continued to perform well in the second period as they held Franklin scoreless for five minutes, allowing Franklin only three points in the last three minutes.

An interesting note for the game was that in the first half of play, L/N had just two turnovers while Franklin committed nine.

The boys strong third quarter performance allowed them to coast through the last period for the victory.

Three of the seven players scoring hit double figures led by Frey’s 14 and Zikmund with 10 and Caleb Griffis with 10. Griffis also had 12 rebounds for a “double-double.”

Statistics: (Scoring – Rebounds – Fouls) Aidan Zikmund 10 – 5 - 0; Wyatt Frey 14 – 6 - 1; Hayden Mazour 0 – 2 - 1; Caden Culbertson 9 – 2 - 2; Caleb Griffis 10 – 12 - 3; Jackson Williams 9 – 8 - 0; Sawyer Cox 4 – 4 - 2; Cooper Heikkinen 0 – 3 - 4; Carson Vaughn 3 – 0 - 0.
