LaVeta Pauline Winslow, the daughter of Virgil and Mabel (Arnett) Warner, was born Nov. 29, 1933, at Gate, Oklahoma. She died Dec. 30, 2024, at the Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings, Nebraska at the age of 91 years, 1 month and 1 day.
LaVeta started her formal education attending school in Booker, Texas. After completing the third grade, the family moved to Jewell County, Kansas, where she graduated as salutatorian of the graduating Class of 1954, from the Burr Oak High School.
She was united in marriage with Earl M. Winslow on Oct. 21, 1951, at Northbranch. This union was blessed with six children. They made their home and raised their family in Jewell County. LaVeta was actively involved in the community and was employed at a number of positions including working at the Jewell County Courthouse, the Farm Service Agency, the Jewell County Appraiser’s Office and several years as the secretary to the superintendent of the Mankato schools. She additionally found time to drive the school bus, taking the kindergarten students home and volunteered her time in earlier years as the high school’s pep club sponsor. Her activities in the community also extended to wall papering several homes. She made countless friends in the area selling Mary Kay Cosmetics (earning the famous pink car.) For a period of time she also was employed as a nurse’s aide at the Webster County Hospital. LaVeta was a member of the WCTU, the KK Club, HDU and taught sewing for nine years with the Norhbranch Busy Bees 4-H Club. She will be fondly remembered as well for her excellent elderberry pies and her numerous necktie pillows.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Earl, on Aug. 28, 2014; son-in-law, Daniel Garman; brothers, Leslie and Clarence Warner; her sister, Doretta Meek; brother-in-law, Marvin Meek; and nephew, Arden Balty.
Left to cherish her memory are her children Cindy (Ron) Kuhn of St. Joseph, Missouri; Vycke Garman of Burr Oak; Ken (Susan) Winslow of Burr Oak; Kary (Debbie) Winslow of Guide Rock; Kurbe (Kelly) Winslow of Salina, Kansas; and Kimma (Richard) Boyles of Esbon; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; sisters-in-law, Lona Warner and Jan Warner; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Her funeral was at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025, at the Northbranch Friends Church with Homer Smuck officiating. Interment was at the Northbranch Cemetery.
Visitation was at 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and Saturday, 80 a.m. to service time at the church.
A memorial fund has been established by the family for later designation.
