2024 sales tax reports send mixed messages

According to the Nebraska Department of Revenue, October sales tax receipts credited to Superior declined 4.3 percent while statewide the receipts grew 5.5 percent. Nuckolls County as a whole toped the state average with a growth of 14.5 percent when compared to the same time in 2023.

Hebron sales declined 1.5 percent which was less than the 8.3 percent drop reported for all of Thayer County.

Red Cloud sales tax receipts grew 4 percent while Webster County as whole declined 1.2 percent.

All numbers were up for Clay County. Sutton receipts grew 12 percent while all of Clay County reported a 4.1 percent growth.

Adams County and the City of Hastings both reported a 1 percent growth.

The October report was pubished on Jan. 3.

The September report was nearly flat with a statewide growth of only 0.4 percent when compared to 2023.

The September Nuckolls County numbers were much more encouraging. County wide the receipts were up 25.6 percent. In Superior the growth was 6.1 percent.

This wasn’t true for nearby counties.

The Thayer County report was dismal. County wide the sales were down 54.3 percent. Hebron was even worse with a decline of 65.7 percent,

Webster County was down 20.2 percent while Red Cloud’s sales dropped 7.9 percent.

Clay County declined 8.4 percent and Sutton 6.3 percent.

Adams County had a growth of 5.5 which nearly matched the 5.6 percent growth for the City of Hastings.

The numbers above do not include motor vehicle sales.

October motor vehicle sales statewide were up 1.4 percent but in Nuckolls County they were 30.8 percent when compared to a year earlier. Webster County declined 46.1 percent, Thayer County grew 4.8 percent, Clay County was down 4.8 percent while Adams County grew 2.4 percent.
