Gaylen Meyer

Gaylen Ernest Meyer, son of Ernest (Bud) H. Meyer and Arlyne Fredericka Johanna (Bartling) Meyer, was born Oct. 12, 1943, at Deshler, Neb- raska. He died on Dec. 22, 2024, at Jefferson Community Health & Life Gardenside, Fairbury, Nebraska, at the age of 81 years, 2 months and 10 days.

Gaylen attended Midway School in rural Kansas and Hubbell Grade School. He graduated from Hebron High School in 1961, valedictorian of his class. He graduated from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, obtaining his master’s degree in 1968, majoring in math. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He taught junior high school for two years at West Point, Nebraska, and then worked as a computer programmer for LT&T-Aliant-ALLTEL in Lincoln, Nebraska, for 30 years, retiring in 2001. In December, 2001, he moved to Hebron. Gaylen enjoyed family, sporting events, fishing, running marathons, hiking, Bible study and reading.

Gaylen was baptized on Oct. 31, 1943, by Pastor G.A. Spring at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Hubbell. His sponsors were his grandfathers, Ernest Meyer and Frederick Bartling. His confirmation verse was John 6:68: “Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life.”

He was a life-time member of Zion Lutheran Church, Hubbell, until its closing in January, 2023. He then became a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Chester, Nebraska.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest (Bud) and Arlyne Meyer; nephew, Delayne Pohlmann; brothers-in-law, Ross Peters and Gary Haddan; sister-in-law, Rosalinda Meyer.

He is survived by his brother, Robert Meyer of rural Hubbell; sisters, Lorena (Merlyn) Pohlmann of Deshler, Maxine Haddan of Fairbury, Janet Peters of Broomfield, Colorado, JoAnne (Gary) Poppe of rural Chester; nieces, nephews and many friends.

His funeral was held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Dec. 30. 2024, at St. John Lutheran Church, Chester, conducted by Pastor Greg Schaffer.

Burial was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, rural Hubbell, following the service.

Visitation was from 1 to 8 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 29, 2024 at Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Belleville, Kansas, where the family greeted friends from 6 to 7 p.m.
