Frequently, almost unanswerable questions are received at The Express office. In recent days we have been asked for stories related to the a man who passed through Superior riding a “bull” coast to coast. The person making the inquiry said he remembered walking with the man to the east edge of Superior.
No doubt someone rode and animal through Superior but we doubt it was a bull. Most likely he was riding a steer. Few bulls are of the temperament to make for good cross-country steeds.
Another person said he remember someone riding a “bull” who attended at least a portion of a Hardy High School football game.
Those inquires were both sparked by the editor of this newspaper sharing on the internet a picture of a man and a “bull” in the summer of 1976 on the sidewalk in front of Walt’s Furniture Store.
We could explain the “bull” on the sidewalk for a we knew the year and month the picture was taken. The visit to downtown Superior was part of a Nora Rodeo promotion. The animal and rider came from Texas and were hired to promote Nora’s big show.
But since we don’t have a definite date or name for the cross country rider, we haven’t tried to locate any information on that event. However, our editor remembers taking a picture of a “bull” and rider in the Hardy area but he doesn’t remember where, why or when. He suspects he was a college student at the time.
Those are the only unusual information requests we can’t answer.
A reader called to ask if we knew what happened around Thanksgiving time to cause what appears to be burned places in Highway 28 near the Wilma Roesti place and on the north side of Brodstone hospital.
She wondered if the two were related and had a hot something fallen out of the sky. Or perhaps a hot something fallen from a passing vehicle.
Old timers at The Express remember the night an excited caller reported seeing an unidentified object in the sky near Webber. Turned out the unidentified object was a new light on the Webber church.
In more recent times, The Express received numerous reports of mysterious drone flights.
And this is the time of year when many youngsters scan the night sky looking for the flight of Santa Claus. If they see a shooting star or airplane their imaginations tell them they Santa Claus and his sleigh.
In the 1960s it was common for adults to scan the skies looking space exploration objects like satellites and balloons.
