The Jewell County Commissioners met on Monday, Dec. 2. Commissioners Keith Roe, Ed Duskie and Brent Beck were present. Myka Zadina, Carla Waugh, county clerk, and Ervin Underwood, commissioner elect District 2, were present at the meeting.
Commissioners went into executive session to discuss non-elected personnel with Anna Porter present. Regular session resumed with Anna Porter signing her evaluation.
Don Jacobs, sheriff, said the speaker-intercom between inmates and dispatch needs to be replaced and he is getting quotes. He reported that Todd Rogers terminated as part-time dispatcher effective Nov. 24. Sheriff Jacobs hired a full-time dispatcher. He also started to check on purchasing a patrol vehicle to replace an older one and found the starting purchase price to be $55,000 plus additional cost to outfit with equipment. Sheriff Jacobs requested to roll over the 2024 capital outlay to the 2025 budget. He said Narcan has been placed in each patrol vehicle as well as with the AEDs in the courthouse. The dash cams are scheduled to be installed. Sheriff Jacobs requested an executive session to discuss wages. Joel Elkins, general superintendent, reported the county pickup at the Burr Oak location was stolen, taken for a joy ride and then left on main street of Burr Oak. Elkins said they are hauling rock from the Jeffery pit. Ed Duskie reported road concerns. Joel said the shop roof replacement will begin.
