Guide Rock raising funds for new cemetery fence

On Wednesday, Nov. 20, the Guide Rock Cemetery Association served a Thanksgiving meal for a goodwill donation. It was held in the old Guide Rock gymnasium. There was a choice of ham or turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, stuffing, gravy, cheese sandwiches and rolls. Water, iced tea or coffee were the available beverages. After loading your plate and finishing the main entree, you headed to the dessert tables. Three long tables lined half the width of the gymnasium were covered with donated, homemade goodies. Extra pans of delicacies were stored in the kitchen to keep the tables well-stocked.

Early birds finished their meals and left while others took home carry-out meals. The second wave of diners stayed longer and visited with neighbors. There were 125 chairs put out and at one time there was not a single empty seat. Meals were served by members of the Cemetery Association as well as 4-Hers and other area youth. When I had finished my meal and was lingering over coffee, I heard a young voice asking if they could take my empty cup. When I looked up, I saw two young lads busy bussing the tables. The youngest was about 5 and the other about 8.

The Guide Rock Cemetery is owned and maintained by the association. It has been in operation since 1871 and is the final resting place of babies as young as 1 day and seniors over 100 years old. There is a white fence bordering cemetery along the road with fields on the other three sides. It is supported by donations but sometimes there is a need for more financial support. The dinner was to raise money to put a 2-rail board fence around the open three sides to keep the cattle out when they are grazing corn stalks and decide to ignore the electric wire border.
