Feds nix electric corridor planning

There is good news on the federal scene for some Kansas landowners including residents of our circulation area who feared they would be losing their land.

The U.S. Department of Energy has stopped pursuing a plan to create the Midwest-Plains and the Plains-Southwest, electric transmission corridors in Kansas.

Rep. Tracey Mann (KS-01) said, “Kansans made it clear from the beginning that we were not interested in the federal government seizing our private land. I heard countless concerns from Kansans who were displeased with the department of energy’s overly vague proposal and the lack of engagement with landowners. I worked to force the department of energy to provide clarity and introduced legislation to prevent the federal government from using taxpayers dollars to seize any private property for the corridor. I also made it clear that the federal government should not override decisions may by Kansas state regulators who are more directly impacted by the proposal.

Senators Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall made similar comments.

The Midwest-Plains corridor was approximately five miles wide and while the final route was not identified, it appeared to some people the route might include portions of Jewell County or Mitchell County.

The Grain Belt Express route has not been cancelled.
