Raider boys Basketball Team lose 'Heartbreaker'

The word, "Heartbreaker" is often used in sports reporting. It can give a connotation of many things, usually something sad, or something that was not supposed to happen.

Well, that could maybe describe the Raider's game with BDS last Saturday. The boys had a chance to prepare for an extra day when the Friday night game with Franklin was postponed because of weather conditions.

BDS is traditionally one of the stronger teams in small town basketball in south central Nebraska, but L-N had the scoring advantage for much of this 32 minute game. The box score:

L-N 11 6 4 12 - 33

BDS 9 8 7 15 - 39

Even with a low scoring game, there was excitement aplenty throughout the game. Wyatt Frey scored first in the game and then Caden Culbertson caused BDS to be flustered when he stole the ball on near back to back BDS possessions and drove the floor to score twice on layups. Aiden Zikmund also had a steal in this period and had an assist to Frey who scored.

The start of the second period was another Culbertson steal who had an assist to Zikmund. BDS got its first lead of the game with 1:20 left before half time. However a Culbertson free throw tied the game at half time at 17-17.

Both teams were cool in the third period making only 5 of 26 combined attempts. BDS's lead came at a 'buzzer-beater' shot.

The score was tied at 31-31 with three minutes left in the game but BDS made 5 of 8 free throws plus one 3-point shot to win the game.

A person could argue free throws were the downfall of the Raiders as they hit only 2-13 while BDS made 9-19. Field goal shooting was almost identical; each team had 10 steals; rebounding was even with each team having 38 and turnover were almost even.

As mentioned, it was a 'heartbreaking' loss.

Frey led the team in scoring with 16 points with Jackson Williams having 10. Culbertson led the team in steals with 4. Frey's 14 rebounds gave him a 'double-double' for the game and Williams had 9 rebounds.

The next games before the Christmas holidays include a trip to Shelton on Friday and a home game against EMF (Exeter-Milligan-Friend).

Statistics: (Scoring – Rebounds – Fouls) Aidan Zikmund 2 – 3 – 2; Wyatt Frey 16 – 14 – 5; Hayden Mazour 0 – 0 – 0; Caden Culbertson 5 – 5 – 2; Caleb Griffis 0 – 2 – 2; Jackson Williams 10 – 9 – 2; Cooper Heikkinen 0 – 0 – 0; Raider total: 33 – 38 – 13; BDS total 39 – 38 – 10.
