Sunday afternoon, residents from Superior, Courtland, Davenport, Deshler, Scandia, North Branch and perhaps other communities, gathered at the Mike and Deb Worm barn southeast of Webber for Christmas in a Barn.
The event began sometime in the 1990s when Doris Worm's (Mike's mother) third grade Sunday School class did not understand what a stable was. Thus, the Worm family invited the class to their barn. At the time, they owned a pair of cross donkeys. Other animals from their farm have joined the manager scene or been borrowed. This year a pet Angus cow, one cross donkey (who brayed frequently during the program) and a small flock of borrowed sheep helped set the scene for the birth of Christ.
Dwight Garman, from the Living Water Family Church in Courtland, directed the activities, which focused on the Biblical Christmas story from the gospels of Matthew and Luke and the congregation singing Christmas carols: O Little Town of Bethlehem, Away In a Manger, Silent Night, The First Noel, Go Tell It on the Mountain, What Child Is This and Joy to the World.
Linda Garman, Dwight's wife of 52 years, selected the musical arrangements which were familiar melodies and lyrics, set to a more modern instrumental arrangements.
A live cast added to the atmosphere. Members of the cast Sunday were Richard and Kimma Boyles as Joseph and Mary; Ruth Fleming and Lenden Worm - shepherds; Brad Hulbert, Kent and Betty Bouray - wisemen and Jillian Hulbert - angel.
After the program, everyone was invited to a tent where coffee, cocoa and cookies were served.
Another similar service was planned for last evening (Wednesday) Everyone was invited. The barn will seat 85 with additional standing room available.
