Lawrence-Nelson High School, along with most all other high schools
across Nebraska, will begin the winter sports seasons for the schools. L-N will have three sports again this year and a very brief introduction follows:
BASKETBALL: It seems that most every year, the basketball teams carry a heavy load in terms of how hard of a schedule they have. This year, 20 games are listed on the NSAA Website for L-N. Of those 20 games, eight are with class D-2 schools (L-N is D-2 this season as well). Twelve teams are either D-1 or C-2.
The season begins this coming weekend as the teams head west. On Friday the first game of the season is at Red Cloud. On Saturday, the teams will travel to Arapahoe. The following weekend sees Franklin come to Nelson on Friday, Dec. 13. On Saturday, Dec. 14, BDS will come to visit.
For the girls, Dan Kennedy will again coach for his second year. He will be assisted by Beth Himmelberg.
Twenty girls have reported for the team this season. An interesting turn of events this season is the absence of any juniors on the team. Seniors and sophomores will carry the load of work this year, but help will come from many players.
Seniors: Kara Menke, Josie Hajny, Valentine Koehler, Addison McCloskey and Hanna Skinner
Sophomores: Paige Huston, Natalia Wherman, Kennedy Beale, Epiphanie
Lowery and Hadley Ostdiek
Freshmen: Maya Fanning, Bayleigh Bolen, Kali Cassell, Brynnly Harrison,
Codi Cannaday, Ella Skinner, Victoria Koehler, Kimber Buescher, Preslea Adams, Maddy Laughlin and Kara Peters
For the boys, Decker Brown is the head coach again this season. The team lost a large graduating class last spring, but does have some experienced players returning to suggest the boys may just have a successful season this year.
The list of 14 players reporting for practice this season includes the following: (not in any order)
Carter Griiffis, Sawyer Cox, Aidan Zikmund, Riley Cannaday, Carson Vaughn, Caden Culbertson, Jackson Williams, Wyatt Frey, Jace Hoelting,
Caleb Griffis, Aaron Church, Cooper Heikkinen, Kolton Menke, Kahlen Johnson.
WRESTLING: Adam Theer is again coaching the Raider Wrestling team this year. The team will be ‘young’ again this season. Last year’s freshmen class advances a year to give L-N a little bit of experience for the season. The team has seven young men as follows:
Sophomores: Leslie Corman, Brandt McLaughlin, Ace Wulf, Grayhm Beck, Gus Harrison, Parker Ostdiek
Freshman: Brody Buescher.
The season will begin this Saturday, when the boys travel to Harvard. The one meet a week continues the following week with a trip to Meridian.
