Fund-raiser well attended in Nelson

Many attended the Nelson Community Club Fund-raiser

The Nelson Community Club sponsors various events, activities and scholarships for the Nelson community. Last weekend, they organized a fund-raiser that will directly impact the Nelson Public Library system. The event was located at1654 Road 3800, along a country road just outside of Nelson.

The club sponsored a garage sale, the proceeds going to the Nelson Public Library. This garage sale is always fun to attend, because buyers name the price on the things they want to purchase. It's fun watching people become overjoyed at this event. It was held on three days, Friday (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.), Saturday (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and Sunday (12 noon to 3 p.m.).

The Nelson Public Library located at 73 E Fourth Street, is open Tuesdays and Thursdays: 3:30 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday 2 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to noon. Throughout the year, several events are scheduled for the public to attend. One of the favorites is the showing of movies on the lawn south of the library. Drinks and popcorn are offered to everyone, but if wanted they have to bring their own pillow and blank must not forget the insect repellant. Several people attend these movies on the lawn and report it's different watching a movie underneath the stars.

One of the more recent events was a block party held with the swimming pool on Aug. 10. Brodstone Health Care provided the hamburgers and hotdogs, and everyone enjoyed the cooking of Colby Fox. A variety of activities and games were the highlight of this event.

With a focus on providing access to knowledge and information, the library plays a vital role in supporting literacy and lifelong learning in the community. The library also provides several items that aide in the development of crafting projects. Groups also meet at the library including a book club and crochet club. To get an updated list of these groups call the library at 402-225-7111.

The Nelson Community has other public organizations offered including; Alcoholics Anonymous, American Legion and Auxiliary, Heritage Highway Association Byway 136, Nelson Community Club, Nelson Senior Center, Nelson Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, Pheasants Forever and Ruby Reds.

Nelson has several churches, they include the Nelson Community United Church of Christ, Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Nelson Church of Christ and just south of town, Salem Lutheran Church.

The city of Nelson has a lot to offer everyone in the community and a good place to start is visiting the library. Computers, crafting items, and books to check out. The groups that meet there help newcomers get involved in and enjoy camaraderie from fellow citizens of the community.
