The Sandy Creek Cougars defeated Stanton 44-42 at UNL’s Memorial Stadium Monday afternoon for their first ever appearance at the state championship games.
A year ago Stanton defeated Sandy Creek in the semifinals and went on to win the state title.
Stanton scored first and at the half led with a score of 28 to 20. However, Sandy Creek picked up 24 points in the third quarter while Stanton scored only eight and although Sandy Creek did not score in the fourth, they held their lead for a win.
Sandy Creek’s string of wins to the finals are as follows: Oct. 24 - Sandy Creek 63 - Niobrara/Verdigre 14; Nov. 1- Sandy Creek 76 - Sandhills Valley 12; Nov. 8 - Sandy Creek 54 - Shelby-Rising City 0; Nov. 15 - Sandy Creek 63 - Lourdes Central Catholic 8.
