Virgil Harold Uhrmacher of North Platte was born April 11, 1944, in Hastings, Nebraska, to Raymond and Helen (Tanner) Uhrmacher.
Virgil grew up on the family farm near Cadams. He attended grade school at Beach District 44 (east of Cadams) through the 8th grade and graduated from Superior High School with the Class of 1962. He was proud to explain the Beach School was now a part of the Nuckolls County Museum in Superior. He liked to add that he was the smartest student in his class. Then he would smile and explain he was the only one in his class.
He was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hastings and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church near Nelson, where he was a member for 40 plus years.
Virgil was united in marriage to Peggy A. Bargen on Feb. 11, 1968. This union was blessed with three children: Russell Gene, Julie Marie and Jeffrey Alan. On Feb.14, 1992, he was united in marriage to Cheryl Mills Bowers. With this union he gained two sons, Jeremiah and Joshua.
Virgil made farming his work for many years. He served as a police officer in Superior and worked at Tennaco Automotive in Cozad. He also served in the National Guard for eight years.
Virgil enjoyed the outdoors and a special hunting trip to Alaska with his son, Russ. He had a love for gardening and enjoyed maintaining and harvesting from it. He was a talented woodworker and created many pieces for the children and grandchildren.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Melvin and Darrell; sister, Catherine; and an infant sister.
Survivors are his wife, Cheryl; Russell Uhrmacher, Mrs. Tom Stevenson (Julie), Jeff Uhrmacher, Jeremiah Bowers and Joshua Bowers; and grandchildren.
His funeral was at 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 22, 2024, at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church with Pastor Bob Deardoff officiating. Burial followed at the Arnold Cemetery with full military honors from the Veterans Honor Guard with Pastor Lee Wonch officiating.
