Departments give reports to commissioners

The Jewell County Commissioners met on Oct. 28, 2024. Commissioners Keith Roe, Ed Duskie and Brent Beck were present. Myka Zadina and Carla J. Waugh, county clerk, were present at the meeting.

The following were present for the office head meeting and provided an update for their department: Carla J. Waugh, county clerk; Myka Zadina; Chris Petet, custodian; and Kevin Peroutek, noxious weed director, emergency preparedness director and 911 coordinator. Those absent: Anna Porter, county appraiser; Cindy Becker, health administrator; Brenda Eakins, treasurer; Shannon Meier, ambulance director; Amanda Davis, register of deeds; Don Jacobs, sheriff; James A. Vaughan IV, solid waste director; Nora Rhoades, Post Rock Extension District director; Scott Wright, county attorney; and Joel Elkins, general superintendent.

Chris Petet said the boilers are ready for winter as Glassman Corp completed the annual safety test.

Kevin Peroutek reported for the noxious weed department that he hired a new part-time employee. He said Jewell County would co-host the weed directors’ monthly meeting with Mitchell County at the Beloit Vo-Tech on Nov. 14. The new fence has been installed. Kevin plans to make chemical purchases before the end of the year. Kevin reported for the Emergency Preparedness that they had the LEPC meeting and discussed the by-laws. He said he is working with the commissioners to wrap up on distribution of the ARPA funds. Kevin said the fair board approached him about receiving funding. He discussed wildfires in the area. Kevin said a mobile radio was installed in Randall’s new fire truck.

Carla Waugh said the clerk’s office is working on the tax checklist but is waiting on levies from other counties to be able to finish the checklist so they can prepare tax statements for the treasurer’s office. The tax abstract is due to the state by Nov. 15. She said advance voting in office began Oct. 16 and as of Friday they had had 171 voters with 130 advance ballots by mail requested. The last day to request a ballot by mail was Tuesday, Oct. 29.

Brent Beck said he attended the LEPC meeting.

Ed Duskie said he attended the online meeting with JCCA. He continues to follow up on road complaints.

Don Jacobs, sheriff, discussed personnel and competitive wages.

Commissioners advised of compliments of the work completed by Jay Johanek to Joel Elkins, general superintendent. Ed Duskie discussed the status of current rock projects.

Chairman Roe opened the bids for the 1994 Dodge pickup. Chris Petet’s bid for $225 was accepted.

Nora Rhoades discussed the repairs needed to the restroom-concessions building at the fairgrounds. She said they were unable to use the restrooms during the fair because of major plumbing issues. They have estimated that $10,000 would take care of the repairs but would not solve their issues for the need for a storm shelter and a first aid room. They are also looking into the possibility of repairing or replacing some of the livestock buildings. The fair board has been searching for grants to repair buildings and for a storm shelter bathroom combination. They requested Jewell County ARPA Funds for the repairs. Fair board members present for the discussion were Jeff Cady, Jared Nelson, Lisa Goodheart, Lesa Peroutek and Natalie Frost.
