Whoever would have thought that we would have four bathrooms in our new town house! We, who grew up with a 2-holer and a path in the backyard. Some folks mention corn cobs, but we were rich enough to always have a Sears Roebuck catalog on hand. Many tales have been told about such privies.
It was especially a hardship in the cold dark nights of winter. One year of heavy snowdrifts, our little boys dug a tunnel through the snow to the outhouse. What an adventure for them! (This was our first month after moving home from four years of city living. What have we done?) Fortunately, we moved and were able to get water and a bathroom in the house. Such a luxury after being without for a few years.
Today our little grandsons get sent to the farmer’s half bath as they come in from the garage, for obvious reasons, the main one being the washable tile floor. However, they go happily because they are sharing Grandpa’s domain. He and the hired man, and other farm-smelling workers, wash up there, before entering the carpeted hallway.
In the No. 1 bathroom, the grandsons are also usually the only ones who use Grandpa’s whirlpool bathtub. The adults all prefer the showers. To the littlest ones though, it is delightfully frightening when the jets are turned on and the bubbles stir up as high as their heads. I took a picture of four of the youngest ones lined up in the sudsy tub, like an Anne Geddes postcard. Now they have their own 8x10 framed bath scene on my bathroom wall. Now they always want their bath picture taken, trying to make a new record high level of suds. Our nephew’s wife, Nancy, took a relaxing luxurious whirlpool bath recently, only with the stipulation that I wouldn’t take any pictures!
The guest bathroom is a pleasant place where you can escape; to a haven of mulberry potpourri, pretty little colored soaps shaped like flowers, a bouquet of shaded pink roses reflected in the mirror and quilted bathroom tissue covered with delicate pink roses. (a far cry from the Sears catalog!) All of the towels, rugs and curtains are wine and pink color coordinated like a picture in a fashion magazine.
The No. 4 bathroom in the basement is small but has everything needed and a nice walk-in shower. It’s No. 1 bedroom next door is our kid’s favorite place to sleep. It is like a warm secure cocoon, quiet and peaceful with a waterbed. (not the sloshing around model) Guests wish it were in their home, a place of comfort.
These necessary rooms are not all necessary, but they are so nice to have, and we deserve them, don’t we?
