Plan to dredge park lagoon this winter

A popular Lincoln Park feature that was first dug in the late 1970s while the late Sam Seever was mayor, the park’s lagoon is undergoing yet another update.

The lagoon was proposed as an alternative to a swampy park area that after the Superior Canal was constructed north of Eighth Street was difficult to mow.

Proponents thought it would make an ice skating rink in the winter and a fishing pond in the summer. Like many plans, things haven’t turned out as good as they were envisioned. The lagoon has been prone to the development of aquatic vegetation and it has been difficult to keep free of sediment. It has seldom been used for ice skating. It has been enjoyed by many in the warmer months.

Work began earlier this fall to drain the lagoon with the hope the area will be dry enough to bring in heavy equipment during the winter months to again dredge it. The sediment material will be used to raise the level of another swampy area in the west part of the park. Once the dredging is completed the plan is to use crushed concrete to stabilize the north bank.

And hopefully in the summer of 2025 it will be refilled and once again a popular area for park visitors.

When a reporter checked on the lagoon earlier this week, it still contained a pool of water though the level had been lowered by several feet.
