SHS volleyball team heads to state

The Superior High School volleyball team was dotted with nail-biters this week, but their persistence paid off.

With a win over Bruning-Shickley-Davenport, they emerged as the subdistricts D1-7 winner. This qualified them for the D1 district finals.

Saturday's win over Bruwell lets them advance to the state show. It was their first district win since 2019.

The Wildcats were seeded number two in this un-district fray behind number one seed Bruning-Davenport Shickley. Superior was ranked number three in Wild Card points while B-D-S held the number two slot.

A wild five set match ensued with Superior hanging on: 26-24, 12-25, 25-15, 22-25 and 15-8, to win at Shickley last Tuesday.

The victory propelled the Wildcats into the district finals. Superior hosted the Saturday match against the Burwell Longhorns. Burwell took the first set 25-20. Superior then regrouped to reel off 25-23, 25-14 and 25-21set wins to reach the eight team state tournament.

Raegan Meyers owned the net against B-D-S with 40 kills. Halle Bargen picked up 10 kills. Sadie Cornell dashed down five kills. Jordan Duncan and Ava Kirchhoff credited four kills each. Cora Schnakenberg provided two kills. Faith Butler finished the match with one kill. Meyers sliced through four aces. Bargen, Butler and Cornell lined through two aces each. Schnakenberg added an ace.

Meyers headed the kill list against Burwell with 30. Bargen provided 14 kills. Schakenberg recorded five kills. Kirchhoff listed two kills. Khloe Mundorf added a kill. Meyers flamed through two aces. Butler and Cornell jammed through two aces apiece. Bargen scored with an ace.

The Wildcats take to the south court of the Lincoln's Pinnacle Bank Arena today (Thursday) to take on the Cedar Catholic Trojans. Match time is scheduled for 3 p.m. Should the Wildcats advance they would likely face a re-match against B-D-S Friday. The Southwest Roughriders are the number one seed and are undefeated for the season.
