Mark Alan Bergt, the son of Mark and Amelia (Imbush) Bergt, was born on June 20, 1927, in Deshler, Nebraska. He died on Oct. 28, 2024, at the St. Elizabeth's Regional Medical Center at Lincoln, Nebraska, at the age of 97 years, 4 months, 8 days.
Mark attended Kiowa school through eighth grade and attended Deshler High School where he graduated in 1944. After high school graduation, he leased a gravel pit from the county.
In 1945, Mark joined the Navy where he completed basic training at Great Lakes, Illinois. He was stationed in Vallejo, California, where he was classified as a 2nd Class Seaman. He took the ferry every day to Mare Island to handle ammunition and transferred it to Treasure Island where he drove the truck to pick up the sailors in San Francisco to be discharged on Mare Island. Mark was discharged from the Navy in 1946. After his discharge he returned to the gravel pit business and purchased it from the county.
Mark was united in marriage to Norgene Schwantz on Dec. 19, 1948, at her parent's home. They were blessed with three children, Roberta, Robert and Rachelle. Mark and Norgene moved to Santa Monica, California, where he worked with Uncle Fred Imbush building houses. In 1949, Mark and Norgene returned to Deshler and built many homes in the Deshler area including his own home in Davenport. He then pursued the gravel business with his brother, Don. The business became Bergt Bros which was a sand, gravel and ready-mix business in Davenport and Deshler.
Mark belonged to the fire department for 25 years and was also fire chief. He was president of the Achievement Board when the Davenport community building was built.
Mark had a passion to build and fly model airplanes. He built his first model airplane when he was 8 years old. He was president of the Hastings Skylarks from 1980 to 1984. Mark owned Bergt R.C. Raceway in Hastings. He was president of the Aurora RC Flyers Club until the age of 94.
Mark enjoyed traveling in his motor home for more than 20 years, while fishing, boating and taking trips to Minnesota.
For his 80th birthday, he joined his daughter (Roberta and son-in-law, Jim) on a cruise to Alaska. A dream of a lifetime.
Mark's other passion was growing beautiful roses. He had more than 50 roses in his yard. His favorite rose was Dolly Parton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Norgene on Oct. 14, 2009; and his brother, Don.
Survivors include his children, Roberta (Jim) Hall of West Burlington, Iowa; Rachelle (Scott) Hinze of Humboldt, Nebraska; and Robert (Shari) Bergt of Deshler; four grandchildren, Kristine (Jerry) Hall, Jason (Maria) Hall, Melissa (Noah) Topil, and Nicholas (Ali) Hinze; five great- grandchildren, Abel Hall, Noah Jurgena, Parks Hinze and Vivian and Mark Topil.
His funeral was held at 11 a.m.,on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024, from St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Davenport, Nebraska with Pastor Greg Schaffer officiating.
Congregational hymns were "Precious Lord Take My Hand," "Just A Closer Walk with Thee" and "How Great Thou Art," with Karen Haake as the organist.
Pallbearers were Jason Hall, Nick Hinze, Noah Jurgena, Noah Topil, Robert Bergt, Scott Hinze and Jim Hall. Honorary pallbearers were Kristine Hall and Melissa Topil.
Interment with military honors was in the St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery, Davenport.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to York General Hearthstone in memory of Mark Bergt.
