Barbara Jeffs, Nelson, is proud of her family. Out of five of her brothers, four of them have served honorably in the U.S. Army. Barbara's father, Alfred Jeffs, a Nelson native, served in the air force and a great aunt (Phoebe McCarthy) served in World War II alongside leading military personnel. After the war was over, she worked alongside the ambassadors of the United states. She has been to lots of countries in the world and when visiting her home, you can see items from all the countries she has lived in. She had a necklace of the world made from gold. She would often say, 'the world was her oyster.'
Several aunts and uncles, along with other relatives, also served our country. Pictured above are three of Barbara's brothers (from left - Brandon, Bradly and Barry). Bruce is not pictured. All are decorated veteran officers. All have been stationed in several places.
Bruce used to talk about being stationed in Bosnia, where he had been shot in the leg from crossfire. During the Clinton era of presidency, terror had stricken the people of Bosnia when one group opposed the other. One cultural group went after the other and tried to kill everyone of that group savagely killing them. Some children survived. When these children grew up, they formed a group to go after everyone that had killed their family members. The U.S sent military personnel in to 'keep the peace.' These fighting groups used to use our military base as cover, thus resulting in Bruce being shot in the leg.
The last tour of duty for all four brothers, was after 911. All four volunteered for duty at the same time, going to Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait. This was allowed because they weren't simultaneously stationed in the same country as the other.
Barbara said, "I have such great respect and admiration for all of my brothers - Bradly, Bently, Brandon and Bruce, for they have all served our country well."
