The Superior High School football team edged the Gibbon Buffaloes, 23-19, at Brodstone Memorial Field Thursday to close out their 2024 season with a 4-5 record. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, their wildcard points fell just shy of securing a Class C2 playoff berth.
It was a successful conclusion for the team which returned to playing 11-man football this season.
It was a seesaw game. Superior held a narrow 8-7 lead at the halfway mark. The Wildcats opened up a 15-7 lead after three quarters. Gibbon roared back in the fourth quarter to score 12 points while Superior secured eight points to eke out a 23-19 win to close out the season.
Lincoln Sander completed five of seven pass attempts for 77 yards. He threw one interception.
Dayne Clark clamped onto three passes for 35 yards. Caiden Smullins reeled in two passes for 13 yards. Caiden Smullins picked up 29 yards with his one reception.
Kyler Boyles headed up the ground offensive with 26 carries for 141 yards and three touchdowns. Sander kept the ball 11 times for 51 yards. Kamden Boyles covered 52 yards with his six carries.
Clark topped the defense with seven solo tackles. Thomas Mathis secured six solo tackles. Kamden Boyles and Kyler Boyles delivered four solo tackles apiece. Colten Bultler added two solo tackles. Declan Miller, Christian Osweiler, Justice Sander, Jaren Gilbert and Trey Blau accounted for one solo tackle each.
Seniors playing their final football game as a Wildcat were Smullins, Mathis, Lenden Wurm, Marcus Martin and Osweiler.
