They came close but couldn’t quite get there. Despite losing to High Plains Community at Lawrence by 27 points earlier in the season, the underdog Lawrence-Nelson Raiders came close to pulling off a tremendous upset Thursday at Clarks. The defense was stingy on both sides for the first three quarters. The game remained tied at 6-6 until High Plains took advantage of a Raiders fumble and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown to take a 14-6 lead.
The Raiders scored on the first play of the fourth quarter to pull within two points of the Storm. A botched two-point conversion attempt left the score at 14-13. High Plains answered with another touchdown to take a 22-12 lead.
The Raiders refused to roll over. They mounted a consistent drive and reached the end zone. A successful conversion left them trailing by two points, 22-20.
The Raiders were afforded another scoring opportunity when they recovered a Storm fumble late in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately their offense faltered and they were unable to pull off the upset.
Wyatt Frey completed one of four passes for 18 yards. He was intercepted once.
Carter Griffis had one reception for 18 yards.
Frey picked up 223 yards on the ground with 31 carries. He scored two touchdowns. Jack Williams carried the ball 12 times for 62 yards and one touchdown.
Frey listed eight solo tackles for the game. Jack williams registered six solo tackle. Cody Brockman hit for five solo tackles. Grayhm Beck nailed two solo tackles. Kolten menke, Carson Vaughn and Aidan Zikmund landed a solo tackle each.
For Brockman, Riley Cannaday, Vaughn and Zikmund, the game was their finale as Raider football players.
The Raiders finished the regular season 5-3 record. They went 0-1 in the playoff round.
