Superior has a new city clerk within sight. The four members of the city council present for Monday night’s meeting approved the hiring of Brenda Corman to fill the position which has been vacant since the resignation of Stuart Alsup.
Mrs. Corman is currently working with the Superior Public Schools vocational agriculture program and will not become the fulltime clerk until July.
She will begin working part time with the interim clerk, Jan Diehl, on Jan. 1 and full time on June 1. Diehl earlier retired as city clerk but has continued working for the city and has served as clerk since Alsup left city employment.
In other action Monday, the council approved seeking proposals for the conversion of a portion of the current tennis court facility in Lincoln Park for use as a pickleball court. Currently the city has two tennis courts located south of Superior High School. It is now proposed that a portion of the recreation facilities grant be used to convert one of the tennis courts into three pickleball courts. As envisioned once the modifications are complete the court could be used for both sports.
The conversion comes with an estimated price tag between $30,000 and $35,000.
Draining of the Lincoln Park Lagoon continues this week in preparation for work on the lagoon.
As the next regular meeting date for the council falls on Nov. 11, a federal holiday, it was decided to schedule the next meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 12.
Two resignations were accepted Monday. After serving nearly 13 years as a member of the Superior Volunteer Fire Department, Chris Peterson has resigned.
Also accepted was the resignation of Andrew Brittenham from the NC3 childcare board. Brittenham said to continue of the board could be a conflict of interest and the Brittenham family is expecting a child and that child could possibly be served by the childcare facility.
With three staff members the center opened on Oct. 14. The facility appears to be a positive addition to the community.
The Candy Cane Lane group reported they had secured additional board members and volunteer helpers and they would begin later this week preparing Lincoln Park for the annual Christmas light display.
Jo Bair, executive director of enCourage was present and asked for a $3,000 contribution to help fund operations in Nuckolls County. A decision on the request was tabled pending further information.
Public hearings were held to proposed zoning ordinance changes but with the absence of Council members Brandt and Flores a decision was tabled.
