Shawon Nobi comes home, completes clerkship at Jewell County Rural Health and Republic County Hospitals

Mezvah Nobi, otherwise known as Shawon, is a Mankato resident who has been studying medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City for the past three years. He will know where he will be doing his residency in March of 2026 and graduate medical school in May of 2026.

Nobi, 24, is completing his family medicine clerkship at Jewell County Rural Health Clinic for half the week and at Republic County Hospital for the other half. He will be doing his clerkship here until Nov. 8 . He chose to do his family medicine clerkship back home because KU just started offering a rural option with his grade. "I knew coming home was a possibility, so I started talking with my rural advisors and they made it happen," Nobi stated. He came to find out if he truly wanted to work in a rural area in the future.

When Nobi started med school, he intended to go into family medicine, but once he got in, he became interested in cardiology, oncology and anesthesiology. He also found his two prior clerkships, pediatrics and OB/GYN, very enjoyable. He wants to experience different specialties so he can make an educated decision when the time comes to apply for residency next year. One thing he knows for certain is that he made the right decision to pursue medicine for his career.

Nobi would most like to practice medicine in Kansas. "Kansas is my first choice, as this state has given me everything," Nobi said. "It's also home to my friends and immediate family." There is a residency matching system in which a medical student can interview at various locations in the U.S., then ranks where they've interviewed, and an algorithm sorts every student in the nation somewhere. After residency, which varies in length of time depending on the specialty, Nobi can choose anywhere he wants to work.

Nobi finds it manageable to juggle life and the demands of medical school because a lot of people around him have similar mindsets. Most of his friends are in his grade. They find time to not stress about school at night and on weekends. During the day, Nobi and his friends study together. "We are all going through this simultaneously and it's a difficult journey," Nobi stated. "So for me, it's just trying to not do this all alone, by working with others, sharing our struggles, and not spending time with just myself because that can drive you crazy."

Nobi's favorite part of his clerkships is getting to talk with the patients. "I love being able to diagnose things and formulate a plan that my attending physician agrees with," he said. "It's really satisfying being able to use that education and interpret things correctly." Despite how satisfying it is to formulate accurate plans of care, Nobi's true favorite thing is speaking with patients, connecting with them, finding out who they are, and the life they've lived.

In medical school, Nobi has found his favorite part is finally being able to live out his dream of studying medicine and providing care. "I like to think I knew about the human body before, but it quickly became obvious that I've barely scraped the surface," Nobi commented. He also enjoys working with peers that have the same dream as he does. Another thing that makes med school enjoyable for Nobi is working with physicians who are interested and motivated to teach the students like Dr. Andy Walker. His least favorite part of med school is the long study hours. "It can sometimes feel tedious, but it's something you have to do for the patients you'll be seeing in the future," Nobi explained.

Nobi's parents and grandparents had a vision of him practicing medicine, but it wasn't until later when he became interested in studying biochemistry that he found the human body so intricate. "I wanted to study it further and medicine was the best route for that," Nobi said. Since Nobi was a child, he had compassion for others so he knew he wanted to work with people in some way, so it made sense to combine that and his interest in science to study medicine.

In his free time, Nobi enjoys time with others, reading, working on art, and any activity that consists of spending time with someone else, be that games online or sports. He enjoys football and basketball and on the weekends can be found relaxing on the couch with his roommates watching the games on T.V. "My hobbies vary greatly, from being alone and reading to going out with someone to eat. I consider eating a delicious meal a hobby," Nobi said.

Nobi wants the community to know he desires to help them and wants to improve their quality of life. "I want to be there for them and take care of them when they need someone that is highly educated in their health problems," Nobi concluded.
