Mary Jo Keenan, the daughter of Joseph L. and Mary E. (Brand) Keenan, was born on March 14, 1954, in Grand Island, Nebraska. She died on Oct. 10, 2024, at the University Nebraska Medical Center at Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 70 years, 6 months, 26 days.
During Mary Jo's life, she lived in Spalding, Ohiowa and Hastings, as well as Boulder, Colorado, Scottsdale, Arizona, and Macomb, Illinois.
Mary Jo graduated from Nelson High School, Atlantic Airline School, and General Motors Accounting School. She also took classes at Spoon River College in Illinois. During her lifetime, Mary Jo worked more than 50 years as an administrative assistant. She worked at Rush Motors Inc. in Boulder, at Western Illinois University in Macomb, more than 40 years at various companies owned by Ronald R. Kelly, and most recently at the Adams County Attorney's Office in Hastings. Mary Jo was a notary in Illinois and Nebraska and belonged to the National Notary Association.
Mary Jo was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings, St. Michael's Altar Society, Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court William McDonald No. 1009, and the international P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter ME. During her life, Mary Jo enjoyed traveling, cooking, gardening, concerts, game nights, family and friends.
Mary Jo was preceded in death by her father, Joseph, on Oct. 14, 1972; her brother, Jim, on Sept. 23, 1979; her brother-in-law, Bill Zook; grandparents, aunts, and uncles.
She is survived by her mother, Mary Keenan of Nelson; siblings, Diane Keenan of Hastings, Rosalle Zook of Willis, Texas, and William Keenan (Renae) of Juniata; along with nieces, Tina Alcantar, Tami Bittner and Emily Nutter; nephews, Tim Zook, Tyler Ruger and Jordan Ruger ;and a host of friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2024 from the St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings, with Father Jeremy Hazuka officiating. Lector was Pam Aldana and Acolyte was Felix Aldana
Music was "7 Minutes in Heaven," "Prayer of St. Francis," "On Eagle's Wings," "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art," provided by St. Michael's Funeral Choir with Kathy Kresbach as the accompanist.
Rosary was recited at 10:30 a.m. before the funeral Mass at the church.
Honorary bearers were Tim Zook, Tyler Ruger, Jordan Ruger, Dan Flanigan, Jack Flanigan and Dave DeBold.
Inurnment at a later date will be in the Nelson Cemetery at Nelson.
