Lavila Vee Poppe, the daughter of Henry and Frieda (Kehnemund) Kapperman, was born July 7, 1936, on the farm northeast of Byron, Nebraska. LaVila died on Oct. 10, 2024, at Republic County Hospital at the age of 88 years.
LaVila was baptized as an infant at St. John Lutheran Church in Chester, Nebraska, and confirmed in 1950. She stayed active at St. John for most of her life, serving as Sunday School teacher, VBS leader, altar guild helper, LWML member and Thrivent representative.
LaVila graduated from Chester-Hubbell-Byron High School in 1954 and then attended Kearney State College.
On July 17, 1955, LaVila was united in marriage to Norman R. Poppe at St. John Lutheran Church and to this union was born: Gregory, Sheryl and Phillip.
After traveling with Norman for military service, they settled in the Chester area where they farmed and raised livestock. LaVila served many years as an EMT with the Chester Volunteer Ambulance and teaching CPR classes.
LaVila was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Lavern and Ron; her husband, Norman; daughter-in-law, Cammie; granddaughter, Carrissa; and an infant great-granddaughter.
LaVila is survived by her children, Greg Poppe of Hastings, Sheryl Stults of Denver, Colorado, and Phillip (Korin) Poppe of Chester; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Berniece Dutton and Helen Poppe; other relatives and friends.
Her funeral was at 2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 14, 2024, at St. John Lutheran Church, Chester, with Pastor Greg Schaffer officiating.
Interment followed at the St. John Lutheran Church, rural Chester.
Visitation and viewing was from 1 until 6 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 13, 2024 at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, 1322 19th Street, Belleville, Kansas, where the family received friends from 4 until 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Memorials are suggested to St. John Lutheran Church or Orphan Grain Train.
