Karleen Cherney

Karleen Dell Cherney, the daughter of Guy Winifred Campbell and Fontella Emma (Salmon) Campbell, was born Nov. 13, 1940, in rural Wayne, Kansas. She died on Oct. 8, 2024, at Heb- ron, at the age of 83 years.

Karleen grew up in rural Wayne, Kansas, attending Wayne Grade School, graduating from Agenda Rural High School. She then attended Wichita Business College, Wichita, Kansas, attaining an associate's degree studying accounting.

Following business college, she worked for Refrigeration Equipment Company for a time and then for Harvey Aluminum Inc. in Torrance, California. She moved to Salina, Kansas, where she worked for Western Auto Distribution. Karleen later worked for Sis Seed and Barth Appliance in Belleville, and then worked for Scott Specialties for 18 years until her retirement in 2012.

On Nov. 20, 1965, she was united in marriage to Larry Gibson and to this union was born, Melody and James. They were later divorced in 1972. On Nov. 10, 1973, she was united in marriage to Dale Cherney and to this union was born, Chris. The couple made their home on the farm in rural Wayne for many years. Karleen moved to Chester, Nebraska, from the farm in 2011.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Ophel Chapter No. 115 since 1965, and the Red Hat Classy Sassy Lassies Chapter No. 34859.

Karleen was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Fontella Campbell; her husband, Dale Cherney; and her brother, Fred Campbell.

She is survived by one daughter, Melody (Dan) Lindsey-Poppe of Chester; two sons, James (Coleen) Cherney of Chester, and Chris (Karly) Cherney of Cuba, Kansas; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Cody (Casey) Cherney and their daughter, Charlie Dell Cherney; Amber Dell Cherney and fiancé (Ethan Nutsch), Taylor Cherney, William Cherney, Robert Lindsey, Samantha Lindsey, Maurica (Justin) Burns and their sons, Corbin and Creed; Dakota Cherney and Noah Cherney; one sister, Deanna Whitehair of Abilene, Kansas; sister-in-law, Patience Campbell of Anchorage, Alaska; other relatives, and friends.

Her funeral was held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2024, at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Belleville, Kansas with Pastor Brian Faust, officiating.

Visitation and viewing was held from 1 until 8 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Belleville, Kansas, where the family greeted friends from 6 until 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Cremation followed the services with family inurnment at the Union Cemetery, rural Wayne, at a later date.

Memorials are suggested to Chester Fire and Rescue or Chester Methodist Church.
