Jack King

Jack E. King of Hebron, was the son of Herman and Emma King. He was born on April 5, 1932 in Riverton. He died on Oct. 11, 2024, at Blue Valley Nursing Home in Hebron at the age of 92.

The youngest of four children, Jack grew up in Riverton, where he attended school. He helped his dad and others with farming during the years of the Great Depression.  Jack enlisted in the Army in December 1952. He served two years on the front lines during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in December 1954.

After returning home, he worked for List & Clark, a contractor. He surveyed interstate roads and large dams, including the Wilson and Pamona dams in Kansas and the Oahe Dam near Pierre, South Dakota. Later he worked for the Corps of Engineers in Kansas.

Jack married Patty Carroll on Aug. 25, 1962, in Nelson. They were blessed with three children: Steven, Sharon and Scott. The couple moved to Hebron shortly after their marriage when Jack began working for the soil conservation service. He then worked for the State Department of Roads. Jack retired from this work in 1997.

Jack was a member of the Hebron Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.

Jack had a vegetable garden. He provided the neighbors with fresh vegetables. Jack also enjoyed fishing and the outdoors. When the children were still home, many camping trips were made to Lovewell Lake.

Watching trains was an activity he enjoyed, and he often went to Belvidere to watch the trains and count the cars. Tinkering with old clocks was another thing he enjoyed. Jack was a handy man – a mechanic and builder. The large garage shaped like a barn was built by Jack. 

Jack is survived by his wife, Patty of Hebron; two sons and one daughter: Steven King of Topeka, Mrs. Tim Savage (Sharon) of Wellsville, Kansas, and Scott King of Topeka; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Emma King; his brother, Bob King, and sisters, Dorothy Scharff and Jaulene Sanger.

His funeral will be held today (Thursday) at 10:30 a.m. at the Hebron Methodist Church in Hebron, with Pastor Brian Faust officiating.   Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Hebron. A visitation was held on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Price Funeral Home in Hebron.
