Interviewing judicial candidates this morning

Nine would-be county judges have asked to be considered as possible replacements for Judge Timothy Hoeft. Prior to being appointed to the district court, Hoeft has served as a 10th judicial district county judge. The district includes Nuckolls, Webster, Clay, Adams, Franklin, Harlan, Kearney and Phelps counties.

The applicants are Cassie Baldwin of Hastings, Melodie Bellamy of Kearney, Sara Bockstadter of Kenesaw, Patrick Calkins of Alma, Jaclyn Drake of Alma, Natalie Nelsen-Pacey of Holdrege, Kane Ramsey of Kearney, John Sander of Holdrege and Henry Schenker of Hildreth.

In Nebraska, the position of county judge is no longer an elected position and all candidates must be attorneys. One of the candidates, Sara Bocksadter, served as Nuckolls County attorney following the death of Timothy Schmidt.

The nominating commission is to meet at 10:30 this morning (Thursday) at the Adams County Courthouse. At that time, all candidates will be interviewed.

Members of the public may present testimony for the commission’s consideration in writing or speak directly with the commission. However the deadline for submitting written testimony was Oct. 10. Oral testimony may be submitted today. The commission must submit at least two names to the governor who will make the final selection.

Attorney members of the commission are Don Theobald, Red Cloud, Robert Parker, Hastings, Amy Skalka, Hastings, and Christen Lovegrove, Geneva. Alternates are Daniel McMahon, Hastings, Rodney Osborn, Holdrege, Richard Calkins, Alma, and Don Bottorf, Sutton. Lay members are Rita Jones, Minden, Jane Ruth, Juanita, Paul Krieger, Hastings, and Barry Meyer, Hastings. Alternate lay members are Jessica Raun, Linden, and John Lothrop, Hastings.
