Members of the Superior and Hardy volunteer fire departments were engaged in a four-hour fight Monday afternoon involving hay bales at a feedlot and grain storage site operated by Matt Kile along the Webber Blacktop about two miles south of Superior.
Sixteen members of the Superior department and eight from Hardy assisted by farmers with tractors and grapple forks fought the fire.
An estimated 40 bales were lost. After the fire was controlled, a pit was dug and the smoldering remains buried to reduce the chance for the fire rekindling.
The cause of the fire has not been determined though an electrical problem was suspected.
While the grain bins were being made ready to receive grain, there was a pop and soon thereafter smoke was detected. However, at last report an electrical system problem had not been identified. The fire did appear to start in bales near a power pole.
