Raider Football lose to Top Ten team, 22-42

The L-N Raider football team reached the half way mark of the regular season last week as they traveled to Shickley to play perennial power, Bruning-Davenport – Shickley (BDS). The Raiders lost the game 22-42, as the young Raider team played well, but just happened to give up several plays the BDS team turned into points.

The loss evened the season record to 2-2. Both of the losses came to teams rated in the top five of class D-2, Howells-Dodge and BDS.

Score by quarter:

L-N 0 16 6 0 - 22

BDS 14 14 6 8 - 42

L-N kicked to start the game and quickly limited BDS to only two yards of offense before they had to punt. L-N gave up an interception to BDS near the center of the field. It took BDS seven plays to score, but an interesting fact of these first five minutes of play was that BDS had rushing yardage of only four yards from five attempts. After a Raider punt that backed BDS to their 8 yard line, BDS found a hole in the Raider defense and raced to a 67 yards touchdown run. The pass attempt was good making the score 0-14.

On the following kickoff return, Caden Culbertson was injured and L-N started to move the ball. In spite of a couple of penalties, the Raiders put together a 56 yard drive that ended on the BDS 16 yard line. The last play was one yard short of a first down. First period score: 0-14.

That BDS possession ended the first period and began the second period, but the Raider defense forced a punt. L-N followed suit and following that Raider punt, BDS scored on a 19 yard pass play. With the pass attempt, the score stood at 0-22.

The last half of the second period had a lot of scoring. Following the BDS touchdown, L-N put together a short scoring drive that ended with a Frey to Aiden Zikmund 9 yard pass. Frey ran the pass attempt to make the score 8-22.

L-N forced BDS to punt again and with just 1:33 on the clock before half time, A Frey pass to a wide open Jace Hoelting covered 58 yards for another Raider touchdown. The pass from Frey to Zikmund was good making the score16-22.

Following the Raider kick off, BDS took advantage of several Raider penalties and scored with just 10 seconds on the clock. Half time score: 16-28.

The second half started with L-N receiving the kick off and Jack Williams contributed a good return and then the Raiders used a nine play, 51 yards scoring drive to close the score to 22-28 when Wyatt Frey scored on a two yard dive. The pass attempt failed.

The rest of the game was scoreless for the Raiders, but one interesting statistics for the game was the total yardage for each team. BDS managed four or five plays in which they gained 20 yards or more but the Raider defense gave up only 344 yards to BDS. L-N, in turn, had only two plays more than 20 yards. BDS forced less than 50 yards more on offense than the Raiders had.

Total offense: L-N 296, BDS 344.

Rushing: Wyatt Frey 73 yards on 14 carries; Jack Williams 80 yards on 14 carries.

Passing: Frey 10 of 24 with two interceptions.

Receiving: Aiden Zikmund 4 for 45 yards, Jack Williams 2 for 14 yards, Jace Hoelting 4 for 84 yards.

Defense: Tackles (assisted – unassisted) Caden Culbertson 2-1, Aiden Zikmund 3-2, Wyatt Frey 12-6 and one for a loss and one sack, Ace Wulf 7-3, Cody Brockman 1-0, Jace Hoelting 2-0, Jack Williams 6-5, Grayhm Beck 7-2, Brandt McLaughlin 3-1, Caleb Griffis 1-2, Kole Thompson 5-2.

Three of the remaining four games in the regular season are at home. That includes this week's contest with Deshler. Deshler comes into the game with an identical record with L-N: 2-2. The game will be played in Lawrence starting at 7 p.m.

Come and enjoy a pleasant evening supporting your L-N football team.
