James “Jim” Powell, 77, of Eagar, Arizona died Aug. 10, 2024. Jim was born on Feb. 12, 1947, in Superior, the son of Lyle Dean and Louise Collins Powell, who raised their family on a farm near Mankato.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Tamara (Kurt) Krug of Lawrence, Kansas; his brother, Mahlon (Clarice) Powell of Overland Park; and sisters, Patricia (Jerry) Grout of Mankato, and Kathy Tucker of Junction City. His grandchildren include Lauren Krug, Neil Krug, Lydia (John) Benda, Luke Trenshaw, Bryanna Cribb, and Alexander Cribb. His great-grandchildren include Gray Alexander, Dean Benda and Ward Benda.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle and Louise Powell; one brother, Allen “Skeet” Powell; and his daughter, Rebecca Jane Cribb.
Jim graduated from Mankato High School. He attended Fort Hays State University on a football scholarship and earned a bachelor’s of science degree in business. He pursued a career in road construction and worked for several companies all over the country. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching football and other sports as well as playing golf. His favorite author was Louis L’Amour.
Jim enjoyed nature especially in the Rocky Mountains. Every summer he traveled with his family to new places from Colorado to Montana to Utah. Later, he found a home in the foothills of the White Mountains of Arizona and New Mexico. Sitting outside at sunset provided harmony on many an evening.
Jim’s ashes will be interred at the City of Eagar, Arizona, cemetery privately by his daughter at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, 2024.
