William Walker

William K. “Bill” Walker, 79, died at the Logan County Hospital in Oakley, Kansas Aug. 29, 2024. He was born on Aug. 9, 1945, in Norton, Kansas, the son of William Gail and Geraldine May Groves Walker. He was a resident of Oakley since 2021 moving from West Plains, Missouri.

In 1963, Bill graduated from Medicine Lodge High School and then graduated from Southwestern College in Winfield four years later. He was in education for almost 50 years. After stints in Dodge City and Salina, he came to Scott City in 1969, where he taught and coached until 1975, when he moved to Union City, Oklahoma to teach at Yukon High School in Yukon, Oklahoma. In 1979, he moved back to Scott City to teach and also coach the Beaverette basketball team. He then assisted with the boys’ basketball team from 1989 to 1992. He then transitioned to full-time administration until 2000 when he moved to Jewel County, Kansas.

At that point, he became a principal and then superintendent for the White Rock School District. After that, he was the superintendent for both the White Rock and Mankato school districts until he led the effort to consolidate those two districts to form the Rock Hills School District in 2006. In 2013, he retired from education and moved to West Plains, Missouri until moving to Oakley in May of 2021.

He was a member of the Ionia United Methodist Church in Ionia, Kansas

On Dec. 18, 1966, he married Marilyn R. Stillwell in Friend, Kansas. She died on June 10, 2021, in Oakley, Kansas.

Survivors include one son, Yancey, and Kristy Walker of Oakley; two step- grandchildren,Christian Koch and Cadence Koch, both of Oakley; one sister, Judy Walker Link of Cunningham, Kansas; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one daughter, Whitney Walker.

His funeral was held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept, 6, at the United Methodist Church in Scott City, Kansas with Dan Hutton presiding.

Interment was in the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas.
