Last Tuesday’s blood drive in Nelson was a success to say the least. The goal of 64 units was set by the Red Cross and the community was able to supply 71. The drive saw four first time donors as well as some pretty impressive milestone donors. Marlin Meyer - 18 gallons, Betty McCutchan - 13 gallons, Thomas Bargen - seven gallons, Jennifer Jensen - seven gallons, Carrie Miler - six gallons, Christina Harwell - one gallon, and Burt Schroer - one gallon.
We were able to accept two walk-in donors in the morning but because of time constraints had to turn two walk-in donors away in the afternoon. The willingness and generosity of the community has never been an issue with the blood drive in Nelson, though we have struggled with Red Cross staffing over the last few years. If this drive is any indication, things are back on track. While the Red Cross was short one employee who called in sick only eight donors, in addition to the two walk-ins, had to be contacted to cancel.
The local coordinators and Red Cross staff expressed their gratitude and appreciation to everyone who assisted in making the drive a success and look forward to the next Nelson Community Blood Drive on Nov. 1.
