Cattle dog trials coming to Nuckolls Co. Fairgrounds

Something new for Nuckolls County is coming to the county fair grounds on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 21 and 22, Cattle Dog Trials.

Those attending the county fair rodeo this year got a taste of cattle dog trials when Tony Jetensky put on a demonstration. For the past 10 years, Jetensky has been breeding, raising and training border collies to work as cattle dogs. He regularly enters his animals in cattle dog trials throughout the Midwest. This year one of his dogs won the state fair nursery class and it wasn't the first time for him to have a state fair winning dog.

More than 40 cattle dog handlers have indicated they will be attending the trials and more are expected to register in the coming week. Dogs are coming from a multi-state area.

In the trials, a dog must maneuver three calves through an obstacle course. The obstacles attempt to mimic real life situations the animals will encounter with obstacles like pens and gates. The dogs are graded on both a point system and time. They will have six minutes to complete the course.

The event will be sanctioned by three organizations including the National Cattle Dogs Association, the Mountain States Stock Dogs Association and the Southwest Cattle Dogs Association,.

The local event is one of three in the Good Life Series. The following Thursday and Friday, a similar event will be held at Pierce, Nebraska, to be followed on Saturday and Sunday by an event on the Boone County Fairgrounds at Albion, Nebraska.

After the conclusion of the Good Life Series, the standings will be combined and prizes awarded.

The event begins at 8 a.m. and is expected to conclude between 5 and 6 p.m. The most experienced dogs will run first. More than 90 runs are expected. The public is invited to attend.

The Nuckolls County Ag Society will be operating a concession stand on the fairground both days.

Jetensky will furnish the calves for the event.
