The parking spaces at Superior's Brodstone Memorial Field filled up early Friday. There was a feeling of optimistic anticipation in the air as fans awaited the opening kickoff of the 2024 season.

The Wildcats have a new head coach, Ryan Renz, and returned to Class C-2 11-man football.

After the presentation of the colors, the game got underway.

Neither team could find a consistent offense rhythm throughout the first two quarters of play. Dropped passes, penalties and staunch defenses held each team scoreless when the first half came to an end.

The Superior Wildcat dance team took to the field to perform for the crowd. They were followed by the Superior High School marching band.

The scoreless streak continued through the third quarter.

Disaster struck mid-way through the fourth quarter when several Superior starters were afflicted with leg cramps. The cramps significantly reduced their playing time when it was most needed.

Fairbury threw a touchdown pass and kicked the point after touchdown to lead 7-0. They quickly followed with another score to take a 14-0 lead and time running out for the Wildcats. When the fourth quarter ended, Fairbury had broken their 15-game losing streak while Superior was left with a 10-game skid.

Kyler Boyles recorded 24 carries for 153 yards. Colten Butler reeled in two passes for two yards. Lincoln Sander carried the ball nine times for 13 yards.

Kyler Boyles recorded six solo and six assisted tackles. Dayne Clark posted three solo and four assisted tackles. Butler finished the game with 4 solo and two assisted tackles. Page and Kash Wenske had an assisted tackle each. Caden Smullins recorded two solo tackles and five assisted tackles. Trey Blau listed a solo tackle and an assisted tackle. Kamden Boyles picked up four solo tackles and three assisted tackles. Dayne Clark was good for three solo tackles and four assisted tackles. Declan Miller had a solo tackle and four assists. Thomas Mathis handed in two solo tackles and five assisted tackles. Lenden Wurm assisted with three tackles. Justice Sander had a solo and an assisted tackle. Marcus Martin listed a solo tackle and four assisted tackles. Cannon Blauvelt nailed three solo tackles and three assisted tackles.

Dominic Page had one carry for 14 yards. Butler took one run for one yard. Kamden Boyles made a one yard run.

Kyler Boyles averaged 44.7 yards for three punts.

The Superior offense gathered 161 yards while Fairbury managed 110. Superior converted 2 of 12 third down conversion attempts. The Wildcats suffered one fumble and one interception. Fairbury gave up two interceptions which Superior was unable to capitalize upon.

The Wildcats host the 0-1 Palmyra Panthers at Brodstone Memorial Field Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. It is the Homecoming game.
