L-N opens football season with loss

It was a long bus ride to Howells for the Lawrence-Nelson Raiders for their first game of the season. It was an even longer ride home after falling 36-8 to the Howells-Dodge Jaguars.

Howells-Dodge sported a 14 point lead after the first quarter. The Raiders scored their lone touchdown in the second period. They pulled off a successful two-point conversion but trailed 20-8 at the half. The Raiders defense remained porous as the Jaguars added eight points in both the third and fourth quarters to pull away for the 36-8 win.

Wyatt Frey, the sophomore quarterback, completed eight of his 24 passes for 53 yards. He was intercepted once.

Caden Culbertson pulled in five receptions of 37 yards. Aidan Zikmund took care of one reception for four yards. Jace Hoelting picked up 15 yards with his one reception. Jack Williams had a one yard gain with his sole reception.

Frey gained 129 yards on 20 carries and scored with a touchdown and two point conversion. Williams picked up 53 yards on 11 carries. Ace Wulf gained eight yards with his two carries.

Frey led the defense with eight solo tackles and eight assisted tackles. Riley Cannaday put up three solo tackles and four assisted tackles. Williams contributed two solo tackles and eight assisted tackles. Kole Thompson and Wulf accounted for one solo tackle and five assisted tackles each. Grayhm Beck made a solo tackle and assisted with four others. Caden Culbertson listed a solo tackle and two assists. Cody Brockman landed a solo tackle. Nathan Stokes and Cooper Heikkinen turned in an assisted tackle each.

The Raiders look for their first win of the season when they travel to Blue Hill Friday for a game with the 0-1 Bobcats. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
