Strength training program for older adults coming to Mankato

Strength training is no longer just for body builders. Stay Strong, Stay Healthy is an eight-week, evidence-based strength training program designed for older adults who want to improve their quality of life and stay active. The exercises are easy to learn, safe and effective.

Join Jamie Rathbun, K-State Research and Extension agent, at the Jewell County Strong Community Wellness Center in Mankato beginning Monday, Sept. 23. The first class will run from 9 to 11 a.m. in order to conduct brief orientation and fitness assessments prior to starting the exercise class. Subsequent classes will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Mondays and Thursdays (with adjustments for holidays). There will be a total of 16 classes. Class is limited to 10 participants, and registration is required in advance (no later than Tuesday, Sept. 10). Fee for the program is $20.

Stay Strong, Stay Healthy classes include warm-up exercise, eight strengthening exercises, with or without hand and ankle weights and cool-down stretches. Over the course of the program, you will increase your strength and improve your balance. Weights will be available on-site, and a trained instructor will help you learn and do these exercises safely.
