On Monday afternoon the Southeast Power Pool, the agency which supervises the distribution of electrical energy in this area, issued a Level 1 Emergency Alert.
In Level 1, there is sufficient electrical power to meet the immediate load requirement but not enough backup resources should the demand increaxse. Should the alert move to the second level, the power pool anticipates it will be necessary to interrupt power supplies.
The power pool serves most of Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and the Dakotas with limited responsibility in many of the neighboring states. In all it has service area in 14 states.
Electric vehicle critics contend the need for a Level 1 Alert this week shows the fallacy of moving to electric vehicles. They argue if the power pool can’t handle weather extremes how will handle the increased demand created by the switch to electric vehicles.
