City Park restrooms closed due to theft

Supplies stolen from Nelson restrooms

Because of problems with theft and vandalism, the City of Nelson has locked the public restrooms in the community’s Harbine Park.

In recent weeks someone has been stealing the facilities’ paper supplies. The first incident was reported on Aug. 8 when a park employee checked the restrooms. He found someone had broken into the toilet paper holder and taken all of the big rolls of paper along with all of the paper towels in the men’s restroom. Normally a key is used to open the holder.

It was hoped this was a onetime incident. It wasn’t. And the second time all the supplies in the men’s and women’s facilities were taken. After the theft occurred again last Thursday the decision was made to close the restrooms. In all 10 big rolls of toilet paper and five rolls of hand towels have been stolen.

The modern restrooms are usually opened in the spring when the danger of freeze up is past and they remain open until the danger of a fall freeze up. Generally this is from April untillate October or early November.
