Bridge work reported on at meeting

The Jewell County Commissioners, Ed Duskie and Brent Beck met Aug. 12, as the Board of County Canvassers. The meeting was opened to canvass the ballots from the Aug. 6, 2024, Primary Election. The commissioners appointed Myka Zadina to fill the vacancy on the Board of Canvassers. Carla Waugh, Jewell County clerk-election officer was also present.

Carla Waugh, county election officer reviewed the election night tabulation and the advance ballot count that was received after election night. She then reviewed the two provisional ballots and the reason for being provisional. She went over the guidelines in the Kansas Election Standards Chapter 3 that provides guidelines for each situation and whether the ballot should be counted. The Board of Canvassers agreed one provisional ballot should be counted and deemed one was invalid for counting. The board opened and counted the one provisional ballot. The board tallied the votes and Waugh recorded the votes in the official abstract.

After that was completed, the commissioners met for the Aug. 12, regular meeting with commissioners Ed Duskie, and Brent Beck present. Also present for the meeting were Myka Zadina and Carla Waugh, county clerk.

Kevin Peroutek, emergency preparedness director, discussed the electronic signs and trailers.

Amanda Davis, register of deeds, discussed replacing the copier-scanner in her office as her current one is 14 years old. Amanda said her budget would be able to cover the monthly lease payment. She also discussed the fax line system they have available. The commissioners approved the purchase of the Eakes copier for the register of deeds for $5,972.96 to be paid out of the equipment reserve fund.

Tom Marr discussed fence issues he has with the adjoining property owner, Lance Hedstrom. The commissioners provided fence viewing law information. They will appoint two commissioners to serve as fence viewers.

Joel Elkins, general superintendent, said work is scheduled to start in December on the Stokes bridge on the county line. Joel said the bridge one mile north of the Athens School, on E Rd and 100 Rd, will be repaired with a steel deck. Duskie reported the old wooden bridge on 240 Rd and C Rd, one mile south of Dan Peters, needs dirt at the end of it. Brent Beck said Brad Jeffery called to report the roads in his area have been neglected. Zach Bruns complained about rock hauling tearing up the road.

Shannon Meier, ambulance director, discussed a memorial gifted to the department.
