Republican River water surprised Superior residents

As the drought continues, the Republican River at Superior is a pretty sorry sight with most of the river bed covered by tall weeds and only slivers of water making their way down stream

Eighty years ago on Aug. 23, 1934, The Express reported, It was quite evident Sunday, that there had been rain someplace for the Republican River had some water in it. Saturday the river was practically dry. But on Sunday, new water reached from bank to bank. The Express rejoiced there was now enough water to ensure the steady running of the cement plant. The plant used river water for cooling and likely for making the rock slurry.

The rain came to late for the county fair but the was still scheduled to open Sept. 12. Because of the drought few county farmers would have anything to exhibit at the “agricultural exposition.” The grandstand racing program would feature horses owned by county residents. A kitten ball tournament was a new fair feature.

It was not thought the construction of the CCC camp on the fairgrounds would interfere with the fair. While the county fair was to start on Sept. 12, the state fair was to start on Sept. 2.

From other sources we have learned in the summer of 1934, it was possible to walk across the river without getting one’s shoes wet. Less than a year later the river set high water record that has not been broken.
