Rains . . .

August . . .

The two words just don’t go together here in south-central Nebraska. But then, Sunday morning, while in church in Deweese, the rain came.

While being grateful for an inch of rain (more or less, depending on where you live) in August, I was reminded of a thought an “old” farmer taught me many years ago. “An inch of rain in August just doesn’t last as long as an inch of rain in April or November.”

Thankful to receive the rain, but ‘mud-puddles’ were few on Monday morning.

I confess that I don’t watch a lot of the national news on TV, but, I do watch enough to see what they are broadcasting. I like to know what the liberal establishment is saying.

This week we have the Democratic Party national convention. We’ll survive it just like we did the Republican convention a month or so ago. However, they go, I sometimes wonder just who dreams up all the “Slogans” used in politics. (They are nothing new as they have been used since our country started.)

What I’m amused about is what the intention of the slogan is. Let’s look at a couple of the most common.

Republican: “Make America Great Again.” – Doesn’t say a thing about how that will be done, but it does give the idea that past presidents didn’t always do a good job and electing a Republican means the candidate will certainly try to make out country great again.

Democrats; Several: - “Yes, we can.” What can we do? I’d sure like to make America great again. Maybe that is what we can do.

“Forward:” This one-word slogan really made me laugh. If I understand it, the liberals really like this slogan because it makes the assumption we are making a break from the conservative past (which they always condemn as being bad) and trying something new. They don’t always know if it is good or bad, but it is different and they think we should go “Forward.”

“Hope and Change.” – Gosh, as all people grow older, there is always something they hope will change. Obama was able to convince many people that he would satisfy that hope and change what the people wanted. Little did most people know just what that meant until it was too late?

“We’re not going back.” – Back to what? Are we not going back to the days when we don’t kill our children via abortions? Are we not going back to days when there were only two genders: male and female? Are we not going back to days when our country had a southern border and we could assume our country was safer because we did not allow so many terrorist into the country?

I just came across a list of former campaign slogans. They number into the hundreds over the years and listing them all would take more space and time. A couple that I like in my lifetime are: “I like Ike,” for former president Dwight Eisenhower. “The buck stops here,” for former president Harry Truman. The final one I’ll give you is from former president Franklin Roosevelt: “Don’t swap horses in mid-stream.”

Gosh . . . the Democrats have seem to have swapped their horse already here in 2024.

I’ve said before that the slogans and party policies, don’t always make a difference. Presidents don’t always follow those guidelines. However, I’m thinking in this election, it is more about the candidate, especially in the Democratic world. I’m guessing it would not make any difference who would be elected if that person would be a Democrat because they are going to do what the party wants them to do.

Amen!
