Superior Municipal Swimming Pool notices increase

The Superior Municipal Swimming Pool opened its doors on May 27 this year. Lap swim is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Regular swim is from 1 to 5 p.m. and 6:30 to 9 everyday.

There are four managers at the Superior Municipal pool this year. They are: Seth Going, Tierney Casper, Corissa Arickx and Emma Henderson. Along with the full staff of managers are 14 lifeguards. The summer started off with 15, which is the maximum number of lifeguards the city will hire.

Parent-child lessons have been another great success this year. This is the second year the pool has offered this class. There have been about 10 participants. Water aerobics have seen an increase in participants as well, with as many as 30 swimmers, but average is 20 patrons per day.

This year, public swim lessons have had 62 children signed up for both the June and July sessions. Fifty-five children are signed up for private lessons.

Midnight swim has had a few set backs this year. The first midnight swim was scheduled for June 27, following the kickball tournament. However, a storm rolled in at midnight of that night and the swim had to end early. Midnight swim was then rescheduled for July 5. When asked if rescheduling the swim for the holiday weekend boosted attendance, Going said that attendance was actually less than the original date.

The hot weather has also not been as benificial as many thought it would be. The heat affects the chemicals that go into the water differently and staff members have to keep a close eye on the water levels. Even though the pool is the most staffed it has been in years, there have been many days this summer where the pool has had to close because of low guard availability. Most of the time this is for the safety of the guards, since sitting in the high temperatures takes a toll on their health. However, the daily average attendence has been 65 patrons.

As for maintenance and leaks, Going said the water has been stable and no leaks have been found in the main or baby pool.
